Debt Free Journey Update - June 2019
Its July now, summer is in full swing and its time to recap the month of June 2019.
Our very first target on this debt free journey was my wife’s HESAA loan, a private student loan from NJ that she took out for undergrad. The recorded starting balance at the beginning of our journey in May was $8787.
Since June was our first full month of crushing debt, needless to say I was obsessed! I ratcheted down the budget, got my wife and I on spending envelopes (many a discussion was had regarding this), and began searching for things around the house I could sell. My pre-debt crushing persona was validated by always having the best gadgets and excessive computing power around the house so finding high-ticket items to sell was not hard. All in all I made $1235 from selling off a gaming computer, Apple Watch, Nintendo Switch, headphones, and speakers. Not too bad right? Whats even better is that I had everything so locked down and enough carry over from May that I was able to COMPLETELY pay off the HESAA loan! GONE! DONE, ZILCH, NADA, NO MO LEFT! $8787 and I wont owe another single penny to HESAA ever again in my life!
That feels so good to type and I am smiling as I slouch back in my chair a bit. I’m proud of how intense my wife and I got in June! That is just the beginning too! We’re moving right along to a Discover Student loan refi that I did back about a year ago, this is a 2 parter with the larger chunk actually being held by Upstart. I took out a 0% interest card with Discover to cover what Upstart wouldn’t take on of my refinance to the tune of about $13850. That balance is currently $11000, but theres some dragons in the hills here… The 0% interest ends in March 2020, so my wife and I have chosen to pay this next before the Upstart loan as previously mentioned in the Financial Independence Intro. Unfortunately I’m down to $3-$5 items left to sell in the house so things wont move AS quickly in July as they did this month but hey its a grind right? The one redeeming factor is that July is a 3 paycheck for me and that means we can still pay off a decent amount. Stay tuned for July’s Round up!
